You don’t have enough room

in Giving

Some years ago I was thinking about the promise to tithers in Malachai 3:10, where it says, “Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.”

I said, “Lord, I’m a tither, but it sure does not seem like that promise is true in my life.  What’s wrong?”  On the inside of me the Lord immediately spoke these words to me:  ”Son, this scripture has come to pass in your life.  The windows of heaven are open above you, and your problem is exactly as the scripture states.  You don’t have room enough to receive it.”

Immediately in my mind I saw this scene unfold.  I saw one of my grandmothers Crystal wedding oats cups.  (You know those colored cups that used to come inside the container?  My grandmother was an avid collector.  :) )  I saw one of those cups sitting on the ground, and it was pouring rain.  That little cup was full.  It was running over.  It was holding all that it could contain.

The Lord impressed upon me that this is what was happening in my life.  I was living under an open heaven, but I didn’t have the capacity to receive all that he was giving.   He explained to me that I could increase my capacity to receive through giving.  He reminded me of the scripture in Proverbs 18:16 which says, “A man’s gift maketh room for him…”  See my problem was that I needed more room.  I didn’t need God to do something.  I didn’t need God to bless me.  I was already blessed!  I needed more room, more capacity, to receive His blessings.

Elijah told the widowed lady who needed a financial miracle, “Go borrow empty vessels.  Borrow not a few.”  Elijah understood that the Lord was blessing this lady.  He didn’t ask God to bless her.  He asked her to do something to receive the blessing.  She needed more room to contain it.  The vessel that she had at the moment wasn’t enough to contain what she needed.

Just like that lady, if you and I are in need of more then we don’t need God to do something.  He needs us to do something.  He needs us to make more room to receive the blessing that He is pouring out.  Giving will enlarge your capacity to receive.
